Oxford Academy of Dance is run by Paula Nattrass and was formed in April 2001. I trained at Doreen Birds, now Bird College and have worked extensively in theatre and television. I have taught at a number of drama college including Guildford School of Acting and Mountview and have been teaching in Oxford since 1995.
Most of the classes are held at St. Aloysius School on the corner of St. Margarets Road and Woodstock Road in central Oxford, the post code is OX2 7PH. See map below:
Some of the classes are also held at The United Reformed Church Hall in Summertown, opposite Laura Ashley, the post code is OX2 7HN. See map below:
For children the RAD Ballet syllabus is followed and the ISTD syllabus for Tap, Modern and Jazz. There are also free movement classes in Ballet, Pilates/Limbering and beginners and intermediate Tap classes for adults.
Yes, all the childrens classes have a standard uniform that should be worn at all times. The uniform list can be downloaded below:
No, not immediately. By all means continue to wear your old uniform until it needs replacing or you are doing an examination.
While they are not compulsory I do recommend that the children do them. It gives them something to aim for and an oppotunity to show their work off to an external examiner and get feedback on what they have achieved.
In short when I believe you are ready. Most children will be able to do one grade each year, although some of the higher grades can take longer. It also depends on how many classes you have been able to attend at that grade.
